Employers’ Panel

The Employers’ Panel enables employers to give their perspective on NEST and contribute to a range of issues and activities.

These issues will vary over time, but could include giving input on whether communications aimed at employers are appropriate and making sure that specific employer concerns are raised at Trustee level.

The Employers’ Panel is also consulted whenever we review the Statement of investment principles (SIP) (PDF). This document outlines the Trustee Members’ approach to how they manage members’ money.

Panel members

Paul Jagger is currently chair of Barnsley LIFT Company and a non-executive member of the Sheffield Chamber of Commerce as well as pro-chancellor and chair of council at Bradford University. He has significant experience of negotiation and working in partnership with other business organisations.

Alison Heywood is currently working as the pension director for Balfour Beatty plc. She has been responsible for all aspects of pensions for approximately 35,000 UK employees throughout the Group since 2007 and looks after various pension plans with total assets amounting to around £3 billion. She has more than 20 years' experience in the pensions industry. Before joining Balfour Beatty, Alison spent most of her career as a pension consultant at the global consultancy firm Towers Watson, where she advised a variety of corporate and pension trustee clients on a wide range of pension issues. Alison is a fellow of the Institute of Actuaries, is a former examiner for the institute’s pension examinations and has served on the regional groups committee of the National Association of Pension Funds.

Bryan Johnston is a solicitor and managing partner of GoodyBurrett LLP Solicitors. He specialises in commercial litigation, civil litigation and employment law. He's also a qualified mediator and is a director of a mediation provider. Bryan is the past president of the Colchester Committee of the Essex Chamber of Commerce and a former board member of the Essex Chamber. Bryan has, in the past, been a non-executive director of a pension company, a social housing charity and a member of an OFWAT customer services committee. He is currently trustee of an education charity. Bryan served with the British Army before qualifying as a lawyer. He left the Army after commanding an infantry company during the first Gulf War. He is a former District Councillor and stood for Parliament at the 1997 election.

Ronke Lawal is the founder of RSL Management Services, a London-based marketing, PR and brand development firm which Ronke set up in 2004. In 2006 Ronke also became a partner at the Simone Williams fashion label. In addition to running two businesses, Ronke is also a non-executive director at The Hoxton Apprentice - a commercially run restaurant owned by the charity Training for Life. Ronke has recently stepped down as chief executive of the Islington Chamber of Commerce.

Sheila Mellish is an independent reward and pensions consultant who until recently was director of compensation and benefits at Mitchells & Butlers. She worked with NEST to lead the implementation of auto enrolment in Mitchells & Butlers. Sheila has extensive experience of operating and implementing a wide range of reward and pensions initiatives across a diverse, multi-unit workforce and is now looking to build on that experience, working across a range of other organisations.

Stephen Smith is chief executive and one of the founders of EMB, a leading economic development company providing a range of business improvement services to companies both through government contracts and commercially. Over the last six years these have included Investors in People, UK Trade & Investment, Leadership & Management and Business Link, plus around 80 different programmes, some of which are EU-funded initiatives. Stephen is a governor of North Notts College, on the Business Board of the NSPCC in Derbyshire and acts as one of a 100 Northamptonshire Ambassadors promoting the county as a place to do business. He has also served on the boards of Princes Trust East Midlands, Explore Northamptonshire, Invest Northamptonshire, North Northants Development Company, Catalyst Corby and the main board of the British Chambers of Commerce.

Karen Thomson is the associate director of policy, research and strategic visibility for the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP). Working for the CIPP for more than eight years, Karen has responsibility for engaging CIPP members on government and research consultations. Karen's main remit is to ensure that the CIPP members'/employers' voices are heard on a range of issues including payroll, business or pension matters. Karen is a tutor for both the CIPP Foundation Degree and the Masters in Payroll and Business Management. She is also a member of the Admin Burdens Advisory Board, and also currently co-chairs the HMRC Employment Consultation Forum.

David Yeandle OBE is director, government relations, of European Employers Group, a specialist adviser on pensions to the Work and Pensions Committee of the House of Commons and a member of the Council of the Pensions Policy Institute. He is also a member of the National Employer Advisory Board of the Reserves of the Armed Forces (NEAB) and the Executive Council of the Involvement and Participation Association (IPA). David was previously head of employment policy of EEF, the manufacturers' organisation, where he represented the views of manufacturers on employment and pensions issues to the UK government and the European Union. David was also one of three experts asked by the coalition government in 2010 to undertake an independent review of auto enrolment. David has also been the director, personnel, of Pirelli Cables, the UK manufacturing part of the international Pirelli Group and is a chartered member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and a fellow of the RSA.

Bill Denison is the managing director of F2 Chemicals Ltd, a speciality chemical manufacturing company based in Preston, Lancashire. He’s been an executive director of the company since it was incorporated by British Nuclear Fuels Plc (BNFL) in 1992. Before this he worked for BNFL and had managerial roles on plants making chemical intermediates used in the manufacture of nuclear fuel. For the last 20 years he’s also been a director of the corporate Trustee of the in-house defined benefit pension scheme. His first association with NEST was in 2011 when F2 Chemicals Ltd was selected as a company to be involved in the launch of NEST.

Nisha Minhas is the head of human resources for Fluidata, a data delivery networking company. She was responsible for setting up and establishing the human resources department for the company. Nisha leads the compensation and benefits offering to Fluidata employees which has been awarded the gold standard by Investors in People for three consecutive years and the Sunday Times Best Company to Work For 2014 and 2015.  Previous to this, Nisha worked for three years in human resources focusing on recruitment. Nisha also has global experience at AFA Press for specialist communications with ministers, monarchy and chief executives.

Nisha is also a member of the Chartered Institute of Personnel and Development (CIPD) and has a CIPD advanced diploma, specialising in human resource management. Nisha has worked closely with NEST and it’s marketing team to promote the auto enrolment to other companies. Fluidata was used as a case study to highlight challenges and solutions the company encountered when implementing auto enrolment.

Emelda Nicholroy is the head of pensions policy at the Universities and Colleges Employers Association (UCEA). She provides pension advice and support to higher education employers. She also represents these employers,  in relation to the schemes they offer to their workers, as the education employer representative on the Local Government Pension Scheme (LGPS) scheme advisory board and the higher education employer representative on the Teachers’ Pension Scheme (TPS) scheme advisory board.

She brings to the role wide-ranging experience from both in-house pensions arrangements and consultancy, and has a background in providing technical pension expertise to employers and Trustees of large defined benefit, defined contribution and hybrid pensions arrangements.

Katie Ivie is the human resources director for Kelly Services, UK and Ireland. Her role is to ensure that the business has the right talents, in the right roles, at the right time and to ensure legal compliance across the organisation.
Katie has 15 years’ experience within human resources, specifically the recruitment sector. She’s also an active member of the sectors largest industry body, The Recruitment & Employment Confederation (REC). Before joining Kelly Services, Katie had a number of roles with Adecco, including head of human resources and head of human resources integration overseeing the acquisition of Spring, Elizabeth Hunt, Badenoch and Clark, and Modis.  
Katie has extensive experience in all areas of human resources including employee relations, compensation and benefits, management information, organisational development and internal recruitment.

Helen Hargreaves is the policy and research manager for the Chartered Institute of Payroll Professionals (CIPP). Before joining the CIPP in April 2011, Helen worked for HM Revenue and Customs for 27 years.
Helen’s main responsibility is to ensure that the CIPP members' and employers' voices are heard on a range of issues including payroll, business or pension matters. Her role includes managing the policy team and the CIPP’s advisory service. She writes articles for the CIPP magazine and other external publications, attends consultation forums with different government departments, conducts consultation surveys and submits responses to the various bodies. She also presents at CIPP and external events, keeping payroll practitioners in touch with the latest developments in payroll and pension legislation.

The Trustee

NEST Corporation is the Trustee of NEST, made up of a Chair and up to 14 Trustee Members. They set the strategic direction and objectives of NEST.
