What should I tell my workers about using NEST?

You’re legally required to inform your workers about automatic enrolment and their new pension rights. This is called statutory information.

You’ll need to provide different information to workers with certain enrolment categories. Once you’ve assessed your workers you’ll be able to identify what type of information you need to give them. For more information about assessing workers please see Who do I need to enrol?

We provide a range of employer notices that cover the different types of notice you may need to send to the workers in your organisation. The notices included are templates only. You’ll still need to add in the details that are specific to your organisation and workers before you send them. Our templates are available in a PDF file, which includes the decision trees or in Word document format, which make it easier for you to copy and paste the content.

You don’t have to use our employer notices if you don’t want to. If you do though, it’s likely to save you time and help you get the right information to the right people at the right time. We’ve included decision tree diagrams in our guidance to help you understand which employer notices you need to send to your workers and what information you must include.

For example, the first decision tree asks if you’re using a waiting period. A waiting period allows you to postpone the date you need to automatically enrol your workers. If you’ve arranged to use a waiting period it means you don’t need to submit contributions until later. It also means you can delay sending your workers the statutory information that applies to them.

You can inform your workers by letter or email as long as it’s sent to a personal address. You must do this for all your workers whether they qualify for automatic enrolment or not.

The Pensions Regulator (TPR) also provides information about how to assess your workers and understand the different worker categories for auto enrolment.
