How do I use ‘File upload history’ to correct errors?

You can use ‘File upload history’ to identify and correct any errors.

There are two ways you can correct the errors here:

  • by correcting and re-uploading your original file
  • by correcting and uploading the ‘Error file

To find the errors on the file you can navigate to the ‘File upload history’ section of the Manage contributions area of your NEST homepage.

The list you’ll see includes all the files you’ve uploaded, even if they haven’t been processed. If you’ve resubmitted a file under a different name after fixing problems on your own computer, then all the versions will be shown here.

At the top of the list, you’ll see a row of headings.

File name – this is the name you saved the file with.

Upload date – this is the date you uploaded the file. You can sort these into newest or oldest first.

Upload time – this is the time you uploaded the file.

No. of member records – this is the total number of members you included on the individual file.

No. of records with errors – this is the total number of records that have errors on the individual file.

Download Error file - the error file is in comma separated values (CSV) format with the same structure as the initial contribution file template. It only contains the member information you’ve provided where we’ve found an error. You can check the errors by looking at the Error log and then make corrections on this file. The error file is useful as a quick way for you to correct the errors and upload the file again but it’s important to check that your information in each cell stays in the correct format. We won’t be able to read the file if Excel changes the formatting.

Download Error log – this explains all the errors in the file you uploaded in a CSV format. The table below shows you how to read the log. Bear in mind that this file will show each error record one row down from the original file because it includes the header information in cell A1.

Column, row or cell



Cell A1 H - this is the Header record You don’t need to do anything with this.
Cell B1 NEST employer reference number This will be fine as any errors with this will show before upload.
Cell C1 The file process type

This should be

CS – for Contribution Schedule

ES – for Exception Schedule

Row 2 onwards in Column A D – this is the Detail record You don’t need to do anything with this.
Row 2 onwards in Column B The number of errors for each record For example 1-6 grouped together over six rows in ascending order means there are six errors for that member.
Row 2 onwards in Column C This tells you which record the error relates to For example Source Record 2 would be the first record from the original file. Source Record 3 would be the second and so on.
Row 2 onwards in Column D The reason for the error For example Null means there is no information in the original cell when there should be.
Final row – Column A T – this is the trailer record You don’t need to do anything with this.
Final row – Column B Number of errors in the original file This can be higher than the number of members in the file as some member records could have more than one error.

The Error log will detail the error for each member. If there is more than one error for a member they will be listed 1, 2, 3 and so on.  When a new line of error starts for a different member the number will start at 1 again.

To view the type of error you can click ‘Show error’ against each member record. Please see Fixing Errors for more details.

You can also download two Excel documents, the ‘Error file’ and the ‘Error log’. You can use these documents together which tell you the full list of errors for each member.

If you plan to correct the errors using your original file you’ll need to make changes using the original Excel document. This will be the one before it was generated to CSV format.

You can make the corrections on the original Excel file, click ‘Generate file’, save and upload the file again. Don’t worry about deleting valid members from the file as if the contributions haven’t changed, we’ll just overwrite the original information.

If you attempt to make the changes on the generated CSV file and then re-upload, you’ll receive the following formatting error....
