Automatic enrolment seminars for employers

Now that automatic enrolment is well underway, the largest employers have already reached their staging dates. In the coming months, thousands more will follow, which means they’ll need to be ready.

Among other things they’ll need to choose a pension provider for automatic enrolment as well as look at internal issues and implementation plans, getting payroll and HR teams up to speed and perhaps looking at external advisers to help them.

What the seminars will cover

Andy Seed, director DC solutions at KPMG will chair the seminars and discuss the challenges of getting automatic enrolment in place. This includes:

  • challenges for early adopters
  • recent announcements on simplification
  • varying experiences of early opt-out levels
  • case studies

Karen Thomson MSc FCIPP, associate director of policy and research (CIPP) will look at the myth that the payroll department will be able to do everything to meet the employer's automatic enrolment duties.

  • how will opt-in and opt-out work?
  • how will workers be assessed?
  • how can existing technology support the changes?
  • will additional software be needed to support payroll?
  • is a project team in place?
  • what are the lessons learnt so far?

Charles Cotton, pensions and reward director from the Chartered Institute of Personnel Development (CIPD) will present ‘From burden to boon: how HR can help ensure that employer and employee money is well spent’ looking at:

  • aligning pensions to strategic considerations
  • aligning pensions to operational considerations
  • questions HR should be asking itself

Richard Bartlett, head of market development, National Employment Savings Trust (NEST) will hold a session on how NEST has been working to help make automatic enrolment easier will cover:

  • how NEST fits in
  • how employers, advisers and payroll are working with NEST
  • key steps to getting started with NEST
