Who’ll be enrolled?

Depending on their age and earnings, some workers will need to be automatically enrolled. Other workers will have the right to join if they ask to. It’s up to you to work out who’s who. You’ll also need to manage the opt-out process for those workers who decide to opt out of the scheme.

If you have an existing workplace scheme, you’ll need to think about whether it’s suitable for enrolling eligible workers, or whether to introduce a new scheme.

You can get guidance on all this from The Pensions Regulator.

Assessing your workers

Not all workers will have to be automatically enrolled. It’s important to assess your workforce and understand which workers have which rights to enrolment and contributions.

Your existing pension scheme

If you already have a pension scheme you may be able to use it for automatically enrolling some or all your workers. If it isn’t suitable for all your workers, you may want to think about using another scheme like NEST for some of your workers.
