Managing staff changes

Your workers' membership of NEST stays with them even if they change jobs, stop working or become self-employed.

This means you won’t have any ongoing administration of their retirement pot if they leave your employment.

What do you do when a NEST member leaves your employment?

If a worker leaves your employment, just tell us on your next contribution schedule. We'll remind you to let us know if any of your workers have left your employment.

You don’t need to close down their pot and there’s no ongoing administration for you.

What do you do when a worker starts employment with you?

  • If you take on a worker who is already a NEST member, you can enrol them as normal. Once you've done this we'll make sure their contributions are paid into their existing retirement pot.
  • If you have a new worker who isn’t already a member of NEST, you can just enrol them into the scheme. NEST will set up a pot for them and you can start contributing.
  • Because a NEST retirement pot belongs to the worker, it’s their responsibility to tell us if their contact details change. As an employer the only action you need to take to set up a worker’s pot is to provide NEST and your workers with some basic information. You can then make the appropriate contributions.

What do you do if a worker stops contributing?

  • If a worker chooses to stop making contributions to their retirement pot, you can just change your contribution schedule and stop paying into their retirement pot.
  • If a worker takes a break from contributing, just let us know. Their retirement pot will stay open and contributions can start again later.
  • If a worker dies while still employed by you, please let us know. We'll work with the people they nominated to receive their pot, or those looking after their estate, to distribute their pot.
